After the war, the British government recognized the new Spanish government. Azcárate then moved to Switzerland, living in "exile" because he could not return to Spain.
United Nations Role
In 1946, Azcárate began working for the United Nations (UN). The UN is an international organization that replaced the League of Nations. Its main goal is to promote peace and cooperation worldwide.
From 1948 to 1952, he worked in Jerusalem as the secretary of the Consular Truce Commission. This group helped to keep the peace in the region on behalf of the UN. Pablo de Azcárate passed away in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1971.
His Family
Pablo de Azcárate had a son named Manuel Azcárate (1916–1998). Manuel later became an important leader in the Spanish Communist Party.
