A long time ago, in late 1882, a railway called the Burlington and Western Railway reached Packwood. This railway was first a narrow gauge line, which means the tracks were closer together than usual. Later, in 1902, the tracks were made wider to become a standard gauge line, which is what most trains use today. The railway was then taken over by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and later sold to the Minneapolis and St. Louis in 1934.
