A Look Back at the Padre Hotel
The Padre Hotel was built in 1928. It has eight stories and was designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. The hotel opened during the exciting early oil boom days in California's Central Valley.
Milton Miller and His Time
In 1954, a man named Milton Miller bought The Padre Hotel. He was known for having many disagreements with the city leaders of Bakersfield. One time, he even put a fake missile on the roof. It was pointed towards City Hall! Miller owned the hotel for 45 years until he passed away in 1999.
Challenges and Changes
The hotel faced some sad times. In the 1950s, a fire on the seventh floor led to tragic events. Also, some people sadly ended their lives by jumping from the roof.
From the 1960s, the Padre Hotel became quite run-down. The upper floors were even declared unsafe. However, the bar on the ground floor stayed open. The hotel finally got a major renovation between 2002 and 2010. It reopened as a beautiful hotel once more.
What's Inside the Hotel?
The Padre Hotel has many rooms and spaces. Some people believe the 7th floor, where the fire happened, is haunted. Guests have reported strange things there. They sometimes hear doors slamming. They also see handprints that seem to reappear even after being wiped away.
