Paillamachu (died 1604) was an important Mapuche leader, known as a toqui. He led his people from 1592 to 1603 in the area that is now Chile.

Who Was Paillamachu?
Paillamachu became a toqui after the previous leader, Paillaeco, was killed. A toqui was a war chief chosen by the Mapuche people to lead them in battle. Paillamachu was a very skilled leader.
Leading the Mapuche Revolt
In 1598, Paillamachu organized and led a huge uprising. This event is known as the Great Revolt of 1598. During this revolt, the Mapuche successfully pushed the Spanish out of their lands. This happened in a region called Araucanía, which is south of the Bío Bío River.
What Happened After the Revolt?
The revolt was a major victory for the Mapuche. It showed their strength and determination to protect their homeland. Paillamachu continued to lead his people for several more years. He died in 1604. After his death, another leader named Huenecura took his place as toqui.
