A Look Back: The Palace's Story

The Palace of Cerro Castillo was built in 1929. It was constructed during the time when Carlos Ibáñez del Campo was president. The palace was designed by architects Luis Browne and Manuel Valenzuela. They used a style called Spanish Colonial Revival. The building project was managed by engineer Fortunato Castro.

Early Use and Traditions

The palace opened its doors in 1930. Before this palace was built, the nearby Ex Intendencia building was used as the president's summer home. A special tradition takes place at the Palace of Cerro Castillo. The person who is about to become the new president of Chile stays here the night before their inauguration. After becoming president, they return to the palace for an official photo with their new team of advisors.

Becoming a Historic Site

In 2000, the city council of Viña del Mar declared the Palace of Cerro Castillo a historic monument. Five years later, in 2005, it was also named a national historic monument for all of Chile. This means it is protected and recognized for its importance.

Palace Design and Features

The Palace of Cerro Castillo is quite large. It has 2,260 square metres (24,300 sq ft) of floor space. The building has three floors above ground and a basement. An elevator inside connects all these levels. Inside the palace, you will find eight bedrooms. There are also many other rooms for living and working.
