The Palacio Peñarol Contador Gastón Guelfi, often called Palacio Peñarol, is a large indoor sports building in Montevideo, Uruguay. It is the main indoor arena in the country. This happened after another big arena, the Cilindro Municipal, closed in 2010.
The Palacio Peñarol is mostly used for basketball games. It can hold about 4,700 people for these games. It can even fit up to 5,400 people for concerts! This arena also has the club museum and offices for Club Atlético Peñarol.
History of Palacio Peñarol
The Palacio Contador Gastón Guelfi first opened its doors in 1955. Over the years, it has hosted many exciting events. In 1994, the famous rock band The Ramones even performed there!
The arena has been updated a few times to keep it modern. It was renovated in both 2010 and 2011. These updates helped make sure it was ready for big events.
Hosting the FIBA AmeriCup
In 2017, the Palacio Peñarol was chosen as one of the places to host the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup. This is a very important basketball championship for teams from North and South America. Uruguay was one of the host countries for this big tournament.
