The Palacio del Duque de Uceda was a grand palace in Madrid, Spain. It was also known as the Palacio de los Duques de Medinaceli. This beautiful building stood in the famous Plaza de Colón.
Building a Grand Palace
The palace was built in 1864. It had two main floors and a special top section. This top part featured a slate roof with elegant mansard windows. These windows are a type of sloped roof window.
A talented architect named Mariano Andrés Avenoza designed the palace. He was from Puerto Rico. The palace was built on a large piece of land. This land was right next to Plaza de Colón. It was also located between the Paseo de Recoletos and Calle de Génova streets.
Owners and Many Names
The palace first belonged to the Duke of Uceda. This is why it was called the Palacio del Duque de Uceda. Later, in 1876, a wealthy man bought it. He was known as the Marquis of Salamanca. However, he never actually lived in the palace.
Around 1890, the palace was sold again. It was bought by Doña Ángela Pérez de Barradas y Bernuy. She was the Duchess of Medinaceli. She was also the Duchess of Denia y Tarifa. Because of its different owners, the palace was known by many names. People called it Úceda, Denia, Medinaceli, and even Marqués de Salamanca.
Fire and Demolition
Sadly, the palace suffered a big fire. This happened on November 25, 1917. The fire started early in the morning. It mostly damaged the front of the building. This part faced the Plaza de Colón. Many valuable artworks inside the palace were lost in the fire.
The palace was rebuilt after the fire. It stood for many more years. But in 1964, a decision was made to tear it down. This was part of a plan to modernize the plaza. Today, a different building stands in its place. It is a modern complex called Centro Colón. This complex has offices, a hotel, and places for entertainment.
