Anthericum milleflorum DC. |
The pale vanilla lily (scientific name: Arthropodium milleflorum) is a beautiful plant found in Australia. It is a type of perennial plant, which means it lives for many years. This plant can grow quite tall, usually between 0.3 and 1.3 metres high. It also spreads out to about 0.3 metres wide.
One cool thing about this plant is its strong vanilla smell. You can notice this sweet scent, especially on warm days. The plant has special parts called fleshy tubers under the ground. Long ago, Aboriginal Australians would eat these tubers.
About the Pale Vanilla Lily
The pale vanilla lily grows in many different places across Australia. You can find it in various environments, including cold, high-up areas like mountains.
Flowers and Appearance
This plant produces lovely flowers in late spring and summer. The flowers grow on tall stems. Each part of the stem has two or more flowers that hang down. These flowers can be white, a light blue, or even pink.
The tubers of the pale vanilla lily are small. They are usually about 20 to 30 millimetres long and 3 to 5 millimetres wide. This is roughly the size of a small finger.
Similar Plants
There is another plant called the small vanilla lily (Arthropodium minus). It looks a lot like the pale vanilla lily. However, the small vanilla lily is smaller overall. Also, it only has one flower at each part of its stem, unlike the pale vanilla lily, which has two or more.
Reproduction
You can grow new pale vanilla lily plants in a couple of ways. One way is to plant its seeds. Another way is to divide the tubers that grow underground. This means you can split the existing tubers into pieces and plant them to grow new plants.
