History of Palm View
Palm View started a long time ago, in the 1800s. It was a small community where people mostly fished and farmed.
Early Churches in Palm View
The very first church in Palm View was built in 1885. It was a Seventh-Day Adventist church. Sadly, this building burned down in 1927.
Later, the Church of Nazarene was rebuilt. By the 1940s, it got a new pastor. It then became the Palm View Bible Church. Today, in 2021, it is known as Palm View First Baptist Church.
Palm View Cemetery
Over the years, local families buried their loved ones in the area. Families like the Gilletts, Smiths, and Bishops used this burial ground. Eventually, it became known as the Palm View Cemetery.
School Days in Palm View
In 1885, a schoolhouse made of logs was built. It taught about 10 children up to the eighth grade. In 1918, a new wooden building replaced the log cabin.
A bigger, new school building was constructed in 1926. It cost about $20,000 and was built next to the cemetery. By the 1940s, the school needed more space. People also noted that the lighting was poor and there weren't enough windows.
In 1956, new classroom wings were added to the school. In 1949, the school had three teachers. Mrs. Editha Smoak was the teacher-principal. The school had a large auditorium that could seat up to 250 people. This made it a popular spot for community events.
In 1993-1994, a brand new building was constructed for the school. The original 1926 building was saved. The Manatee Historical Society wanted to preserve it. It is now part of the school complex and serves as the school's media center.
