Where is Palmar Located?
Geography of the Village
Palmar village is situated right on Route 55. It sits on the south bank of the Río Negro river. The village is also located just south of the important Palmar Dam.
Distance from Other Cities
Palmar is about 75 kilometers (or about 47 miles) east of Mercedes. Mercedes is another city in Uruguay. The village also lies right on the border with the Río Negro Department.
History of Palmar Village
How Palmar Got Its Name
The area where Palmar is now located started as a group of buildings. This group was formed in 1973. It was created because of the construction of the Palmar Dam. At first, this area was called "Coronel Lorenzo Latorre".
Becoming a Village
On March 26, 1982, "Coronel Lorenzo Latorre" officially became a "Pueblo". This means it was recognized as a village. This change happened because of a special law called Decreto-Ley Nº 15.254. Later, on December 28, 1990, the village's name was changed. It became "Palmar" by another law, Ley Nº 16.170.
