Information
Purpose Drainage Windmill

Palmer's Drainage Windmill is a special type of windmill. It is located in the beautiful county of Norfolk, England. You can find it north of Upton Dyke, near the village of Upton.

Upton Dyke is a waterway that flows west from the River Bure. This mill is found just east of Upton village. Its main job is to help drain water from the surrounding land.

What Makes Palmer's Mill Special?

Palmer's Drainage Windmill has a very interesting design. It is one of only two "Hollow Post" drainage mills left in the Norfolk Broads. The other one is called Clayrack Drainage Mill.

A "Hollow Post" mill means the main central post is hollow. This allows the drive shaft, which turns the machinery, to pass through it.

How Palmer's Mill Works

This mill has a small cap and sails. These parts look like smaller versions of the bigger tower windmills you might see. The cap is the top part of the mill, and the sails are the large blades that catch the wind.

To make sure the sails always face the wind, Palmer's Mill uses "tail vanes." These are small blades at the back of the mill. They help turn the whole mill into the wind's direction.

A Mill on the Move: Palmer's History

Just like Clayrack Drainage Windmill, Palmer's Mill was not always in its current location. Windmills were sometimes moved if they were no longer needed or if a new location was better.

Palmer's Mill was moved in 1976. It came from a different site near a place called Acle. This shows how these important structures could be relocated to continue their work.
