The Palmerton Historic District is a special area in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. It's recognized as a national historic district. This means it's a place with many old buildings and sites that are important to history.
The district covers a large area of Palmerton. It includes 1,262 buildings, seven structures like bridges and a gazebo, and four sites such as parks and a cemetery. These are called "contributing" because they add to the district's historical importance. You can find all sorts of buildings here, like homes, shops, factories, and churches. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. This honor means it's very important for how the community was planned and grew.
A Special Planned Community
The Palmerton Historic District became official on January 19, 2018. That's when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This district is important because of how Palmerton was designed. It shows how the town was planned and developed over many years.
A historian named Shelby Weaver Splain explained why this area is so special. She said that this part of Palmerton was planned by Stephen Squires Palmer. He was the president of the New Jersey Zinc Company. The company built Palmerton to be a home for its workers. This made Palmerton a unique "planned community." The oldest buildings in this district were built around 1890. New construction continued until about 1962.

The Palmerton Historic District includes many important buildings and sites. There are 1,262 buildings that help tell the story of the district. It also has three parks and a cemetery that are considered important historical sites.
You can also find seven important structures here. These include five railroad bridges, one road bridge, and a gazebo in a park. Some of the most notable buildings are St. John's Episcopal Church and the Stephen S. Palmer School. Both of these are located on Lafayette Avenue. The Living Hope Lighthouse Church on 3rd Street is also a significant building.
