Palmira became its own district on November 30, 1995. Before that, it was part of the Cañas District. It was officially created by a special government decision.

Palmira covers an area of about 203.96 square kilometers. That's like a square with sides about 14 kilometers long. It is located about 225 meters above sea level. This means it's a bit higher than the coast.
