Early Life and Starting Out
Pamela Fryman was born and raised in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
When she started her career, she didn't plan on becoming a director. She thought she might work in merchandising, like her father. Her first job in television was as an assistant on The John Davidson Show. Later, she worked on the TV series Santa Barbara, where she started as a secretary and worked her way up to become an assistant director and then a full director.
In 1993, a producer named Peter Noah gave Fryman her first chance to direct a sitcom. The show was called Café Americain. This opportunity was a key step in her long and successful career.
A Career in Comedy
Before directing for TV, Fryman was interested in directing for the stage. Her experience with theater was very helpful. When she was hired to direct episodes of the popular show Frasier, the show's creator, David Lee, wanted rehearsals to feel like a play. Fryman was perfect for the job and directed 34 episodes of Frasier.
Major Directing Roles
Fryman became the main director for another hit sitcom, Just Shoot Me!. She directed 94 of the 148 episodes of that series.
Her most famous role was as the director of How I Met Your Mother. The show's creator, Craig Thomas, said she was great at communicating with everyone on set. He said, "She makes everyone feel they've been heard and respected." Fryman loved working on the show and said it was her "fantasy realized."
She also directed 19 episodes of the spin-off series, How I Met Your Father.
In 2016, Fryman reached a huge milestone in her career. She directed her 500th episode of television while working on the show The Odd Couple.
