My Once Life

Pamela J. Peters (born 1970 in Shiprock, New Mexico) is an Indigenous filmmaker and photographer from the Navajo Nation. She creates films and photo exhibitions to help people understand the real lives of Native Americans. Her goal is to show the truth and break down wrong ideas often seen in movies and on TV.

Telling Stories: Pamela J. Peters's Work

Pamela J. Peters uses her art to share important stories. She wants to change how Native Americans are shown in the media. She creates projects that highlight their history and modern lives.

Exploring History: "Legacy of Exiled NDNZ"

One of Pamela's special projects is called “Legacy of Exiled NDNZ.” This project was inspired by an old film from 1961 called The Exiles. Her work looks at how a law from 1956, called the Indian Relocation Act of 1956, affected Native American families for many years. This law encouraged Native Americans to move from their reservations to big cities like Los Angeles. Pamela's project shows how this move changed lives both in the past and today.

Changing Views: "Real NDNZ Re-Take Hollywood"

Another exciting project by Pamela is “Real NDNZ Re-Take Hollywood.” For this, she takes famous pictures of old movie stars from the early days of Hollywood. Then, she recreates these pictures using Native American actors from today. This project helps to show that Native Americans are part of Hollywood's past and present, challenging old stereotypes.

Pamela's Journey: From Navajo Nation to UCLA

Pamela J. Peters was born into the Tachiiʼnii clan (Red Running into the Water) and the Tiʼaashcíʼí clan (Red Bottom People) of the Navajo Nation. When she was 17, she moved from her home on the reservation to Los Angeles.
