Early Life and Education
Pamela Sue Martin was born in Westport, Connecticut. She finished high school at Staples High School in Westport in 1971. Before graduating, she worked at a hamburger stand. A friend told her about modeling, which paid much more. Pamela decided to try it too. She became a teen model for print ads and TV commercials.
Acting Career Highlights
Starting in Movies
Pamela started modeling when she was 16. She heard that Columbia Pictures was looking for girls for a movie called To Find a Man (1972). Even though she had no acting experience, she decided to audition. After three months, she was chosen for the main female role.
In 1972, at age 19, she was picked by producer Irwin Allen for The Poseidon Adventure. This was based on her work in To Find a Man. More movies followed, including Our Time (1974) and Buster and Billie (1974).
Becoming a Teen Idol
Pamela's manager encouraged her to work in television. Her role as Nancy Drew on ABC-TV made her very popular with teens. The ABC show first alternated between The Nancy Drew Mysteries and The Hardy Boys Mysteries.
In the second season, the shows were combined into The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. This meant Nancy's role became smaller. Pamela was not happy about this and decided to leave the series. Her last episode as Nancy aired on January 1, 1978.
Starring in Dynasty
From 1981 to 1984, Pamela played the strong and wealthy heiress Fallon Carrington Colby on the ABC show Dynasty. She was part of the show from its very beginning until the end of its fourth season. After Pamela left, her character was written out as "missing and presumed dead." Later, another actress, Emma Samms, took over the role in 1985.
Pamela also hosted Saturday Night Live on February 16, 1985. In the 2000s, she worked as an artistic director for a theater group in Idaho. Since then, she has continued to act in films and on television from time to time.
Other Interests and Later Life
In the early 1980s, Pamela enjoyed activities like scuba diving, tennis, and skiing. She has always cared about the environment. In 1984, she appeared in a public service announcement to help save pink dolphins in the Amazon River. This ad was directed by Clyde Lucas, who also worked on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries.
As of 2024, Pamela is writing her memoir, which is a book about her life, called 'The Spirit of the Matter'. She is involved with several environmental groups, such as Greenpeace and the Sierra Club. She is also the national spokesperson for the Wild Horse Sanctuary, which helps wild horses.
Personal Life
Pamela Sue Martin has been married four times and has one child. She has also spoken about her experience with interstitial cystitis, a bladder condition.
