Panchanan Maheshwari (born November 9, 1904 – died May 18, 1966) was a very important Indian botanist. He is famous for inventing a way to fertilize plants in a test tube. This special method helped create new types of angiosperms, which are flowering plants. These new plants could not have been made by natural breeding.

Maheshwari also believed in good education for everyone. He helped create the first biology textbooks for high schools in India in 1964. These books were published by the NCERT. He is known as the "father of Indian plant embryology" and wrote a book called An Introduction to Embryology of Angiosperms.

Early Life and Education

Panchanan Maheshwari was born in Jaipur, India. He went to Ewing Christian College in Allahabad. At first, he wanted to become a doctor.

While at Ewing College, he met a teacher named Winfield Dudgeon. Mr. Dudgeon inspired him to change his studies from medicine to science. Maheshwari earned his Bachelor of Science (1925), Master of Science (1931), and Doctor of Science (1931) degrees. All these degrees were achieved with Dudgeon's guidance.

Amazing Discoveries in Plant Science

Maheshwari was a brilliant researcher. He developed a special technique called "test-tube fertilization" for flowering plants. This meant he could help plants reproduce in a laboratory. This invention was a big step forward. It allowed scientists to create new hybrid plants. These were plant types that could not be crossbred naturally before.

He also pushed for growing very young plant parts in a lab. This helped scientists learn more about how plants develop. His work greatly advanced the study of plant embryology, which is the study of how plant embryos form and grow.

A Great Teacher and Leader

Besides his research, Maheshwari was also a dedicated teacher and publisher. He taught Botany at the University of Delhi. He made this department a world-famous place for studying plant embryology and tissue culture. Tissue culture is a way to grow plant cells or tissues in a controlled environment.

Maheshwari started a scientific journal called Phytomorphology (Plant Morphology). He was the main editor until he passed away in 1966. He also created a popular magazine called Botanica. He wrote textbooks to make teaching life sciences better in schools.

In 1951, he founded the International Society of Plant Morphologists. This group brought together scientists from all over the world. He was also a founding member of the World Academy of Art and Science. This group started in 1960 to help solve important problems facing humanity.

Awards and Recognition

Panchanan Maheshwari was respected by scientists worldwide. Many important groups honored him. In 1934, he became a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences in Bangalore. The Indian Botanical Society gave him the Birbal Sahni Medal in 1958.

He was chosen to be the General President of the Indian Science Congress Association for 1968. Sadly, he passed away on May 18, 1966, before he could take on this role. Many of his friends and students honored him by naming new discoveries after him. Examples include Panchanania jaipurensis (a type of fungus) and Isoetes panchananii (a plant).

In 1965, Maheshwari was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). This is a very high honor for scientists. He was only the second Indian botanist to receive this award.
