The Papilio manlius is a special type of butterfly. It belongs to the Papilionidae family, which is also known as the swallowtail butterflies. This beautiful butterfly is only found in Mauritius, an island nation. This means it is endemic to that area, making it quite unique!
What Does the Papilio manlius Look Like?
Let's look at what the Papilio manlius butterfly looks like! Both male and female butterflies have a special pattern. On their front wings (called the forewing), you'll see a band made of three spots. These spots are in specific areas of the wing.
On their back wings (called the hindwing), there's a shorter band of spots. Both the front and back wings have pretty blue spots near their edges. These are called "submarginal spots." However, the front wings usually have only a few of these blue spots.
How Scientists Group the Papilio manlius
Scientists like to group living things based on how they are related. This is called taxonomy. The Papilio manlius butterfly belongs to a special group of butterflies. This group is found in Africa and is called the nireus species group. There are 15 different types of butterflies in this group.
Most butterflies in the nireus group are black with bright green bands and spots. Even though they are called swallowtails, most of them do not have the "tails" on their hindwings that many other swallowtails have. Only two butterflies in this group, Papilio charopus and Papilio hornimani, have these tails.
Here are the butterflies that belong to the nireus group:
