Papinville is a small, unincorporated community located in the southern part of Bates County, Missouri. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

This community sits right on the banks of the Marais des Cygnes River. It's also within the area covered by the Harry S Truman Reservoir, a large lake. The town of Rich Hill is about seven miles to the west of Papinville.

A Look Back: Papinville's History

Papinville was officially planned and marked out in 1847. This process is called "platting." The community got its name from Melicourt Papin, who was a French trader.

A post office opened in Papinville in 1848. It helped people send and receive mail for many years. The post office stayed open until 1906. Over time, people sometimes spelled the name differently. Other names used were Papinsville and Rapinsville.

Famous Connections

A well-known person from Papinville was Bill Rapps. He was born here in 1881. Bill Rapps grew up to become a professional baseball player!

The Historic Bridge

Papinville is also home to a special landmark: the Papinville Marais des Cygnes River Bridge. This bridge is very old and important. In 2002, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list recognizes places that are important to the history of the United States.
