Parent-in-law facts for kids
When someone gets married, their family grows! A parent-in-law is the parent of your husband or wife. It's a special family connection made through marriage.
What is a Parent-in-Law?
When two people get married, their families become connected. A parent-in-law is the mother or father of your spouse (your husband or wife). This relationship is called affinity, which means a connection through marriage, not blood.
For example, if your brother gets married, his wife's parents become his parents-in-law. And you become their sister-in-law or brother-in-law. All these family members connected by marriage are often called "in-laws".
Meet Your Father-in-Law
A father-in-law is the father of your spouse. So, if you get married, your husband's dad or your wife's dad would be your father-in-law.
Sometimes, two men might become fathers-in-law to each other's children. They can be called co-fathers-in-law. If they also have grandchildren from that marriage, they might be called co-grandfathers.
Meet Your Mother-in-Law
A mother-in-law is the mother of your spouse. This means your husband's mom or your wife's mom would be your mother-in-law.
Similar to fathers-in-law, two women who are mothers-in-law to each other's children can be called co-mothers-in-law. If they share grandchildren, they might also be called co-grandmothers.
