The Story Behind This Pastry
Imagine a pastry shaped like a bicycle wheel! That's exactly what the Paris-Brest looks like.
This special dessert was first made in 1910. It was created by a baker named Louis Durand. He had a bakery in a town called Maisons-Laffitte, in France.
Louis Durand made the Paris-Brest because Pierre Giffard asked him to. Pierre Giffard was the person who started a famous bicycle race. This race was called the Paris–Brest–Paris race, and it began in 1891.
The pastry's round shape was made to look like a bicycle wheel. It was a way to celebrate the exciting bicycle race.
Bicycle riders in the Paris–Brest race loved this pastry! It gave them lots of energy because it was high in calories. Its interesting name also made it popular. Today, you can find Paris-Brest pastries in bakeries, called pâtisseries, all over France.
