Paris Qualles was born in Harlem, New York City. He grew up in Long Branch, New Jersey. He finished high school there in 1970.

He went to Rutgers College to study English literature. He also learned about Photography. Later, he went to UCLA for more studies. He first wanted to direct plays. But then, an agent offered to help him with writing. That's how he started his writing career. His first job was researching for a TV show called Amen. He later wrote scripts for it.

Paris Qualles has won many special awards for his writing. He received the Humanitas Prize and the Writers Guild of America Award for his movie The Color of Friendship. He also won the Black Reel Award for The Rosa Parks Story.
