The Park Street Firehouse is an old fire station in Adams, Massachusetts. It was built around 1890. This was a time when many factories and businesses were growing in Adams. The building is a great example of Queen Anne Victorian style architecture, made with bricks. This style is known for its unique shapes and decorations. The station is now used for businesses. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 because of its history and design.

What Does the Firehouse Look Like?

The Park Street Firehouse is in the center of Adams. It sits on the east side of Park Street. It is located between two taller buildings, the Armory Block and the Jones Block. Even though the firehouse is also three stories tall, these other buildings make it look small.

Building Materials and Design

The firehouse is made of red bricks. The ground floor used to have large openings for fire trucks. These have been changed for shops or offices. The second floor has three windows that can be opened up or down. The third floor also has three windows. These windows are special because they are set inside round-shaped openings.

Special Window Features

The windows are a very cool part of the building's design. They have small pieces of colored glass. These colorful panes are found in the windows on the second floor. They add a unique and pretty touch to the old building.

History of the Park Street Firehouse

The Adams Fire District was started in 1872. This group helped protect the town from fires. It was mostly run by the owners of local factories. They also offered fire protection to other buildings in nearby villages for a fee.

Building a New Fire Station

The Park Street Firehouse was the second building built for the fire district. It was designed to be larger than other fire stations in smaller villages. This shows how important fire protection was in Adams.

Changing Uses Over Time

When it was first built, the upper floors of the firehouse had apartments. People lived there. Later, in the 1900s, the building was used by an ambulance service. Today, the Park Street Firehouse is used for different kinds of businesses. It has changed a lot over the years, but it still stands as an important part of Adams' history.
