The Parker's antbird (Cercomacroides parkeri) is a small bird that belongs to the Thamnophilidae family. This family is known for its many species of antbirds. Parker's antbird is special because it is endemic to Colombia. This means it can only be found naturally in Colombia and nowhere else in the world.

Discovering the Parker's Antbird

This unique bird was first officially described in 1997. An American bird expert named Gary Graves gave it its scientific name, Cercomacra parkeri. The name parkeri was chosen to honor another American bird expert, Theodore A. Parker III. He was a very important ornithologist who sadly passed away in 1993.

A Change in Family Tree

Scientists often study animals very closely, even looking at their DNA. In 2014, a special study looked at the DNA of birds in the Cercomacra group. They found that this group wasn't quite right. To make the scientific groups more accurate, they decided to split the Cercomacra group into two new, clearer groups. Because of this, the Parker's antbird and five other species were moved to a brand new group called Cercomacroides. This helps scientists better understand how different bird species are related to each other.
