Parkersburg is a small place in Indiana, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Scott Township in Montgomery County.

History of Parkersburg

Parkersburg has an interesting past that dates back to the 1800s.

How Parkersburg Started

In 1837, two people named Thomas Arnett and Noble Welch planned out the community of Parkersburg. When a community is "platted," it means they drew up maps showing where streets, lots, and public spaces would be. This was an important step in creating a new settlement.

Where the Name Came From

Parkersburg was named after its very first postmaster, Nathaniel Parker. A postmaster was the person in charge of the local post office. It was common for early American towns to be named after important local figures.

The First Post Office

A post office was set up in Parkersburg in 1835. Back then, post offices were super important! They weren't just for sending letters. They were often the center of communication and news for the whole community. People would gather there to send and receive mail, hear updates, and connect with others. The Parkersburg post office served the community for many years until it closed down in 1903.
