Parkrose is a cool neighborhood located in the northeast part of Portland, Oregon. It's considered part of East Portland. It has neighbors all around it: Sumner is to the west, the Columbia River is to the north, and Argay is to the east. To the south, you'll find Parkrose Heights and the city of Maywood Park.

Sandy Boulevard runs through the neighborhood. The area north of Sandy Boulevard is mostly for businesses and factories. The area south of it is mainly where people live.

Parkrose has a special transportation hub called the Parkrose/Sumner Transit Center. You can catch the Red Line of TriMet's MAX Light Rail here. A bridge at the transit center goes over Interstate 205. You can also take C-Tran buses from here, which travel into Washington. Parkrose also has its own Parkrose School District.

Discovering Parkrose History

Early Days of Parkrose

The official map for Parkrose, called a plat, was first recorded on October 5, 1911. A branch post office for Portland was set up here in 1921.

Parkrose as a Growing Suburb

For many years, Parkrose was a small area with farms and homes outside of Portland. This changed in the 1920s. On May 23, 1925, a local newspaper, the Oregon Journal, wrote about Parkrose. It said that Parkrose was becoming an important place for people who traveled to work. It was seen as one of the most promising and growing areas on the eastern side of Portland.

Joining the City of Portland

Later, Parkrose became an official part of Portland. In 1980, it was counted as a "Census-designated place" (a special area defined for population counting). At that time, Parkrose had a population of 21,108 people.

Historic Columbia Pioneer Cemetery

The Columbia Pioneer Cemetery is located in Parkrose. It was started in 1877. You can find it at the corner of NE 99th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard.

Parkrose Community Archive Project

In 2024, a former student from Parkrose, Jada Krening, started a project. It's called the Parkrose Community Archive. This project works with the community to collect and share the history of Parkrose.

Fun Activities in Parkrose

In July 2018, people from the community worked together to paint a street mural. It looks like a compass and is located where NE 109th and Skidmore streets meet.

Every summer, Parkrose hosts a special event called "Taste of Parkrose." It's a great way for everyone to enjoy local food and activities.

Senn's Dairy Park

Senn's Dairy Park is the only city park in the Parkrose neighborhood. It's about one acre in size. It offers a nice green space for residents to relax and play.
