The Parkside is a neighborhood in the western part of San Francisco, California. It is a cool place to live, found in the southern part of an area called "the Avenues." It sits south of Quintara Street and north of Sloat Boulevard.

Sometimes people call it the "Parkside District." This neighborhood has many fun parks and green spaces. These include:

Discovering Parkside: Where is This Neighborhood?

The Parkside neighborhood officially began in July 1905. A group of people, led by William Henry Crocker, bought land from the estate of Adolph Sutro. They wanted to create a big new development. The "park" in Parkside's name actually refers to the trees and plants around Laguna Puerca. This area is now called Pine Lake. Older residents sometimes called it "Mud Lake" or "Crawdad Lake." It is located west of Sigmund Stern Grove.

What Are Parkside's Borders?

The Parkside neighborhood has clear boundaries. To the north, you'll find Quintara Street. Sloat Boulevard forms the southern edge. On the west, it's bordered by 36th Avenue or Sunset Boulevard. The eastern border is a bit diagonal. It runs from 12th Avenue in the north to 19th Avenue and Sloat in the south. This eastern line touches the old Rancho San Miguel property. Later, more homes were built further west. This area, from Sloat Boulevard to the ocean, and from Quintara south to the San Francisco Zoo, is known as the Outer Parkside. It is also part of the larger Parkside District.

Schools and Libraries in Parkside

Parkside Elementary School used to be at 25th Avenue and Vicente Street. It closed in 1975 and was taken down in 2004. Today, a new school stands there called Dianne Feinstein Elementary School. It is part of the Parkside Campus. The Parkside Library is also nearby. You can find it at 22nd Avenue and Taraval Street.

What Makes Parkside Special?

Parkside is mostly a place where people live. Most of its buildings are homes. They look quite similar, often made of stucco with different decorations. These houses were built in the 1920s and 1930s. This was a time when building homes started using assembly-line methods. This made construction faster.

Getting Around Parkside: Public Transport

The neighborhood has a main street for shops and businesses called Taraval Street. The L Taraval line of the Muni Metro serves the area. This train system helps people travel to downtown San Francisco. Other public transport lines also run through Parkside. These include the 29 Sunset, 48 Quintara-24th Street, 66 Quintara, and 18 46th Avenue buses.

Community Hubs and Events

The San Francisco Public Library has a Parkside branch. It is a great place for books and learning. Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove is a well-known park in the area. It hosts the Stern Grove Festival every summer. This festival offers free outdoor concerts.

Who Represents Parkside?

The Parkside neighborhood is part of District 4 in San Francisco. A "supervisor" represents this district. They are like a local elected leader who helps make decisions for the community. The current District 4 supervisor is Joel Engardio.
