Parle-G is a super popular brand of biscuits made by Parle Products in India. In 2011, a company called Nielsen said it was the best-selling biscuit brand in the whole world!
The Story of Parle-G
Parle Products started making sweets and candies in 1929. This was in a place called Vile Parle in Mumbai, India. They began making biscuits in 1939.
When India became independent in 1947, Parle Products wanted to show that their "Gluco" biscuits were just as good as British ones. They even made ads about it!
For a long time, these biscuits were called "Parle Gluco Biscuits." But in the 1980s, the name changed to Parle-G. The "G" first stood for "Glucose," which is a type of sugar. Later, people also said "G for Genius!"
In 2013, Parle-G made history. It became the first Indian brand of everyday products (like food and drinks) to sell over 50 billion Indian rupees worth of goods. That's a lot of biscuits!
Why Parle-G is So Popular
Parle-G is often enjoyed as a snack with tea. It's one of the oldest and most famous brands in India. For many years, people easily recognized it by its special white and yellow wax paper wrapper. This wrapper has a picture of a young girl on it. This drawing was made by an artist named Maganlal Daiya way back in the 1960s!
Recently, Parle-G biscuits started coming in plastic wrappers too. But don't worry, the new packaging still looks like the classic design. To show off the new plastic, ads even showed a Parle-G packet sitting in a fish tank!
In 2011, Nielsen, a company that studies markets, announced something big. They said Parle-G was the world's best-selling biscuit brand. It even sold more than other famous brands like Kraft Foods’s Oreo! India is actually the biggest market for biscuits in the world. It sells more biscuits than countries like the US, China, and Italy.
By 2013, Parle-G had a huge network. Its biscuits were sold in over 6 million shops across India. In 2014, a report called the Brand Trust Report said Parle-G was the 42nd most trusted brand in India.
Another big reason for Parle-G's popularity is its low price. Outside India, a large pack (418 grams) might cost about 99 cents. In India, a smaller "snack pack" (65 grams) can cost as little as ₹3 (which is about 4 US cents). You can even find packs with just two biscuits! In the 1990s, the Indian superhero Shaktimaan also helped promote the brand on TV.
