Parliament Square is a historic city block in Hobart, Tasmania. It is located right behind the Tasmanian Parliament House. This area is currently being updated and rebuilt.

When it's finished, Parliament Square will have a Marriot International hotel. It will also include seven shops, a new government office building, and a public plaza. The block is surrounded by Davey Street to the north and Murray Street to the east. Salamanca Place is to the west, and Parliament House is to the south. The whole area is about 7,322 square meters (78,813 square feet).

A Look Back: History of Parliament Square

Parliament Square is made up mostly of old government buildings. These include the former St Mary's hospital and the Red Brick Building. There was also the Government Printing Office here. Other buildings were used as Parliament annexes. Two smaller office buildings for public services were also part of the square. This included the building at 10 Murray Street. There was even a building for the Tasmanian government's phone switchboards.

Over time, the state government used these buildings less and less. By 2018, most of them were empty.

What's New: The Redevelopment Project

In April 2009, the Tasmanian Government looked at three ideas. These ideas were for how to rebuild and update the Parliament Square area.

The government chose Citta Property Group to do the project. Citta planned to make the area feel like Federation Square in Melbourne. This meant tearing down the State Offices at 10 Murray Street. It would also open up the side facing Murray Street.

The plan also included improving the older buildings on Davey Street. A new seven-story building would be built facing Salamanca Place. There were also plans for new shops and cafes. An amphitheatre with a large screen for public events was also part of the design.

Of the three ideas, one plan would have kept the modern building at 10 Murray Street. It would have been updated inside. But the other two plans wanted to tear down the building.
