The Paropsis atomaria is a common type of leaf beetle. You can find them in a group of beetles called Chrysomelinae. The name "Atomaria" means "speckled" or "freckled," which describes their appearance!
Where Do They Live?
These interesting beetles live along the eastern coast of Australia. You can find them all the way from Adelaide in the south to Brisbane in the north.
Life Cycle and Reproduction
Paropsis atomaria beetles are quite busy during the summer months. In most places where they live, they can complete two full life cycles during this time! A female beetle can lay a lot of eggs, sometimes up to 600! She carefully places these tiny eggs at the very tip of a leaf or a small twig.
Are They Pests?
While most beetles are harmless, Paropsis atomaria is one of a few types of paropsine beetles that can sometimes cause problems. They can become a "pest" for trees grown in plantations. This means they might eat too many leaves and harm the young trees that are being grown for wood or other products.
