Parramatta Park is a large and important park located in Parramatta, which is in Western Sydney, Australia. It's not just a park for fun; it's also a place with a lot of history. This park officially became a public park in 1858. It covers about 85 hectares, which is like 210 football fields!

The land where Parramatta Park now stands has been important for a very long time. It was originally part of the land belonging to the Darug people, who are the traditional owners of this area. They called this place Burramatta. You can still find signs of their history and culture within the park today. The park also has special natural areas called Cumberland Plain Woodland, which are important for local plants and animals.

A Park with a Past

Over the years, the park has seen many changes. In 1860, a railway line was built right through the park. This meant that some old buildings, like Governor Macquarie’s stables, had to be taken down.

Later, in 1913, a part of the park was used to build Parramatta High School. Then, in 1981, another section of the park became part of the Parramatta Stadium area.

Motor Racing and Trams

Did you know that in the early 1950s, motor races used to happen on the roads inside the park? It must have been very exciting!

There was also a group called the Steam Tram & Railway Preservation Society. In 1954, they built a short railway track in the park. Sadly, their depot was destroyed in a fire in 1993, and the track was removed a few years later in 1998.

What You Can See Today

Today, Parramatta Park covers 85 hectares. It stretches along the Parramatta River on the western side of Parramatta's main city area. Inside the park, you'll find Old Government House. This historic building was once the country residence for the early governors of New South Wales.

The park is looked after by a special group called the Parramatta Park Trust. They make sure the park stays beautiful and open for everyone to enjoy all year round.
