Partner, also called Croft's Partner or Old Partner, was a famous British Thoroughbred racehorse. He was born in 1718 and became a very successful racer. Partner won six out of his seven races. After his racing days, he became a top sire, meaning he was a father to many other racehorses. He was the best sire in Great Britain and Ireland four times. Partner also helped continue the important Byerley Turk horse family line.

Partner's Racing Career
Early Life and First Owners
Partner was born in 1718. His breeder, Charles Pelham, sold him to Mr. Cotton of Sussex. Later, Lord Halifax bought Partner. Lord Halifax was the one who raced Partner.
Winning Races and Achievements
Partner was a very strong racehorse. He raced over long distances, usually four miles. He was unbeatable in 1723 and 1724. He took a break from racing in 1725. In 1726, he returned to the track. He won a special race against another horse named Sloven.
His Only Loss and Retirement
Partner's only loss happened in 1728. He was beaten by a horse called Smiling Ball. After this race, Partner was sold to John Croft. This marked the end of his racing career. He then began his new job as a sire, helping to create future champions.

Becoming a Top Sire
After retiring from racing, Partner became a very important sire. He lived to be 29 years old. During his time as a sire, he was named the Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland four times. This means his children were winning many races.
His Famous Children and Grandchildren
Partner had many important sons and daughters. His most famous son was Tartar. Tartar then became the father of an even more famous horse named Herod. Herod was a very influential horse in the history of Thoroughbreds.
Partner also sired other notable horses. These included Cato, Golden Ball, Sedbury, and Morton's Traveller. He also sired a mare (female horse) who became the mother of Matchem. Matchem was another very important horse in racing history.
