The Old Passaic County Court House and its Annex are two very old and important buildings. You can find them on Hamilton Street in Paterson.

The Old Court House: A Look Back

The main Old Passaic County Court House was built between 1898 and 1903. It was designed by an architect named Samuel Burrage Reed. The building shows off a style called Classical Revival architecture. This style often uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings, making it look grand and official.

The Annex: From Post Office to County Office

The Court House Annex was built in 1899. It first served as the United States Post Office for the area. This building was designed by Fred Wesley Wentworth in a style known as Dutch Baroque Revival. This style often features fancy decorations and curved shapes.

In 1936, Passaic County bought the building. It was then renamed the Passaic County Administration Building. It became an important part of the county's offices, right next to the main courthouse.

Becoming Historic Landmarks

In October 2012, these old buildings were recognized as very special. They were considered important enough to be added to both the state and national lists of historic places.

To help with this, the state gave $20,000 to prepare the paperwork. The main entrance of the old courthouse, which needed repairs, was fixed up and reopened in 2014. Finally, in 2015, both buildings were officially listed as historic places.

Modern Passaic County Buildings

Passaic County also has newer buildings to handle its growing needs.

The Current Court House

The main Passaic County Court House building today is located at 77 Hamilton Street. It was built in 1968. This building was constructed to hold the county's courts and many of its administrative offices.

The New Administration Building

A newer Passaic County Administration Building was built in 1994. It is located at 401 Grand Street. This modern building helps house even more of the county's important offices and services.
