The Story of Passiona
Passiona was invented by a dairy farmer named Spencer Cottee. He lived in Lismore, New South Wales in the 1920s. Spencer had lots of passionfruit on his farm and didn't want any of it to go to waste. So, he came up with the idea of making a passionfruit cordial.
How Passiona Became a Drink
Spencer Cottee first made Passiona in 1924. He talked about his new drink in 1925 at a meeting in Mullumbimby. People loved it! In 1926, a factory was built in Sydney to make the drink. By 1927, Passiona was being sold to everyone.
In the 1930s, people even took Passiona with them when they traveled overseas to places like Canada and Jerusalem. This shows how popular it was!
Who Made Passiona?
Spencer Cottee allowed other companies to make Passiona too. Some of these companies included Geo. Hall & Sons in South Australia and Bowral Bottlers in New South Wales. The name Passiona was also used for Cottee's jelly crystals, which are used to make jelly desserts.
What's in Passiona?
The delicious passionfruit pulp used in Passiona came from different places. At first, it came from farms in Australia. Later, it also came from a group of farmers on Norfolk Island. Cottee's even set up special places in New Guinea, in areas like Goroka and Mt. Hagen, to get more passionfruit.
