The Passionist Fathers Monastery is a special old building in the Norwood Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It was built in 1910. This building was home to the Passionists, a group of Roman Catholic monks.

Monks are people who dedicate their lives to religious practices. The Passionists believed in living a simple life. They also hosted spiritual retreats, which are times for quiet thought and prayer.

History of the Monastery

The Passionist Fathers Monastery was built over 100 years ago. It was finished in 1910. The architect who designed this beautiful building was Joseph Molitor. He also designed many other churches in Chicago around that time.

On March 6, 2013, the monastery was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site that should be protected.

Amazing Architecture

The monastery's design is a mix of three cool styles. These are Classical Revival, Baroque Revival, and Romanesque Revival.

Classical Revival Style

The main entrance of the monastery shows the Classical Revival style. It has a fancy railing called a balustrade. There is also a detailed triangular shape above the entrance, known as a pediment. These parts make the building look grand and important.

Baroque Revival Style

You can see the Baroque style in the unique roof shape above the main entrance. This is called a Dutch gable. Baroque architecture often has dramatic and decorative elements.

Romanesque Revival Style

The Romanesque style is seen in the monastery's windows. They are rounded at the top, like arches. Also, there are decorative stone supports called corbels. These details give the building a strong, solid look.
