Pastel de feijão (plural: pastéis de feijão) is a yummy Portuguese pastry. It has a crispy outside and a sweet, creamy filling made from navy bean jam. These tasty treats first appeared in the town of Torres Vedras in the early 1900s. Some people think they might have been made even earlier by nuns.
What is Pastel de Feijão?
These pastries are made with a special dough. The dough is rolled out very thin. Inside, there's a delicious jam. This jam is made from beans, sugar, eggs, and almonds.
Pastel de feijão cakes are usually about 7 centimeters (about 2.7 inches) wide. They are often sold wrapped in clear plastic. You can find them in cardboard boxes, usually with six cakes inside. Many pastry shops also sell them one by one. They are a popular dessert in Portugal.
