Patricia Poleo is a Venezuelan journalist born in Caracas. She is well-known for her important investigative work. She won the King of Spain Journalism Award for finding out where a powerful Peruvian official, Vladimiro Montesinos, was hiding.

Patricia is the daughter of journalist Rafael Poleo. She also used to be the director of her father's newspaper, El Nuevo País. She is recognized for her journalism and for speaking out against the government in Venezuela.

Her Journalism Career

Patricia Poleo finished her studies in Social Communication and advertising at the Andrés Bello Catholic University in 1987. She did a big investigation into the case of Vladimiro Montesinos. Montesinos was a key figure during the time of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori. He was wanted for serious wrongdoings.

Patricia Poleo's investigation helped find Montesinos, who was a fugitive. She reported that he was being protected by security forces linked to the government of Hugo Chávez while he was hiding in Venezuela. In her book, Tras las huellas de Montesinos (Behind the traces of Montesinos), she wrote about personal attacks she faced while trying to do her job. Her hard work earned her the prestigious Rey Juan Carlos Prize for Journalism.

In 2007, when Íngrid Betancourt was kidnapped, Patricia Poleo claimed that Betancourt was being held in Venezuela and would soon be released. The Colombian government, through its foreign minister Fernando Araújo Perdomo, expressed doubts about this information. Poleo also criticized Hugo Chávez for using the situation to improve relations with France. A few days later, President Chávez offered to help negotiate for the release of kidnapped people, but he said he did not know where Betancourt was.

Facing Challenges

On January 31, 2002, the office of the newspaper Así es la noticia was attacked. This happened a day after Patricia Poleo and other journalists published a video. The video showed conversations between the Venezuelan Army and a Colombian guerrilla group called FARC. Two months later, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights provided protection for the journalists involved.
