Patricia W. Swan (born April 21, 1924 – died January 23, 2012) was an amazing American architect. She helped design many important buildings!
Patricia worked for a big international company called Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for 35 years. This company designs buildings and engineering projects. She was one of the first women to become a "Participating Associate" with the firm in 1956. Later, in 1970, she became an "Associate Partner." She is famous for her work on big projects like the Toronto Dominion Square in Calgary, Alberta and Denver Square in Denver, Colorado.
Patricia's Early Life
Patricia was born in Malden, Massachusetts. Her parents were Mary (Flett) Swan and Dewey Swan. She went to two different colleges: Antioch College and Columbia University.
Her Exciting Career
Patricia first studied at Antioch College for about a year. Then, in 1944, she joined the Women's Army Corps. This was during World War II. From 1944 to 1946, she worked as a military meteorologist, which means she studied the weather for the army!
After her time in the army, Patricia went to Columbia University. She earned her degree in architecture in 1951. Right after graduating, she started working for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. This was a time when it was very unusual for women to work in architecture.
She first worked in the company's New York office. Later, she helped start and grow their office in Denver. Patricia was the main designer for the Republic Plaza in Denver. She also designed many other buildings in that city. She and her team created tall buildings and large city areas. These places were designed for people to work, shop, and have fun. Patricia retired from her amazing career in 1986.
Patricia Swan passed away in Denver in 2012. She was 87 years old. Her sister, Sandy Swan, once said that Patricia had a special mix of skills. She was great at leading projects and also very artistic!
