Patrick Gordon Campbell (born June 6, 1913, died November 10, 1980) was a well-known Irish journalist, humorist, and television personality. He was also known as the 3rd Baron Glenavy.

Life and Career

Patrick Campbell was born in Dublin, Ireland. His father was Charles Campbell, 2nd Baron Glenavy, and his mother was Beatrice Elvery, a talented artist. He went to Rossall School and then Pembroke College, Oxford, but he left Oxford before finishing his studies.

He began his career at The Irish Times newspaper. There, he reported on daily court cases. During the Second World War, he served as a Chief Petty Officer in the Irish Marine Service. After the war, he rejoined The Irish Times. He wrote a popular column called "Irishman's Diary" using the pseudonym 'Quidnunc'. He also wrote for other publications like the Sunday Dispatch, Lilliput, and The Sunday Times.

His Books

Patrick Campbell wrote many books. Most of these books were collections of his funny articles. These stories had first appeared in newspapers and magazines. Some of his well-known books include A Long Drink of Cold Water and An Irishman's Diary. He also wrote an autobiography called My Life and Easy Times. Many of his books featured drawings by the famous illustrator Quentin Blake.

Television Appearances

Patrick Campbell had a stammer, which is a speech difficulty. Despite this, he became very popular on television because of his quick wit and humor. He was a regular team captain on the long-running game show Call My Bluff. On this show, he often appeared opposite his good friend, Frank Muir. Frank Muir once said that when Campbell struggled with a word, he would hit his knee and say, "Come along! Come along!" Some of his funniest stories were about his experiences with his stammer. He was also very tall, standing at six feet five inches. Many of his humorous pieces described the challenges of being so tall, like finding clothes that fit. He also made regular appearances on the show That Was The Week That Was.

Patrick Campbell was married three times during his life. He lived for many years in the South of France. He passed away in Cannes on November 10, 1980. His brother, Michael, who was a novelist, became the 4th and last Lord Glenavy after him.
