Early Life and Music
Patrick Moten was born in Los Angeles, California, on March 17, 1957. From a very young age, he showed a great interest and skill in music. He finished high school at Westchester High School in 1975.
Patrick first studied classical music. His teachers were Lucille B. Hughly and William Wilkins. However, he changed to soul music after seeing Billy Preston perform.
Starting a Band and Touring
When he was just 15, Patrick formed a band called Manufactured Funk. Ike & Tina Turner's son, Ronnie Turner, played bass in the band. Manufactured Funk opened shows for many famous groups. These included Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and Rufus.
Later, Patrick traveled the world as a keyboard player with Tina Turner. Tina's former husband, Ike Turner, taught Patrick about recording music. He learned these skills at Ike's Bolic Sound recording studio in Inglewood.
Working with Famous Artists
Through Ike Turner, Patrick became friends with Bobby Womack. Bobby hired Patrick to help produce his album Roads of Life. Patrick also played keyboards on the album.
He worked with Bobby Womack on many other projects. These included the albums The Poet and The Poet II. He also worked with Sam Cooke's daughter, Linda Womack. Patrick helped write Bobby Womack's song "If You Think You're Lonely Now."
Years later, parts of "If You Think You're Lonely Now" were used in Mariah Carey's song "We Belong Together." Because of this, Patrick Moten was also credited as a co-writer for Mariah Carey's hit song. "We Belong Together" won a Grammy Award in 2006. Patrick also wrote "Love Has Finally Come At Last" for Bobby Womack and Patti LaBelle.
Producing and Songwriting
In 1982, Patrick produced Johnnie Taylor's album Just Ain't Good Enough. This album included the song "What About My Love." The next year, he produced Anita Baker's first album, The Songstress. He wrote most of the songs on that album.
In 1987, Patrick wrote several songs for Rosie Gaines' album No Sweeter Love. This album was not released until 2000.
Patrick wrote almost 60 songs that were officially registered. He toured with a jazz show that featured artists like Joe Sample and Gerald Albright. He also toured with Frankie Beverly and Maze. Patrick wrote songs for other artists too, such as Mica Paris, Tone Lōc, and Sarah Vaughan. He continued to work with Anita Baker. He co-wrote "Rhythm of Love" for her 1994 album Rhythm of Love.
