Patrick was the son of Andrew Murray of Balvaird and Janet Graham. His mother was the daughter of William Graham, 2nd Earl of Montrose. Patrick also had a brother named David Murray, 1st Viscount of Stormont.

Patrick Murray was a "gentleman of the king's chamber" from 1591 to 1596. This meant he was a trusted helper and adviser to King James VI. He spent a lot of time with the king and helped with many important tasks.
