He also sometimes plays rhythm guitar, bass, and keyboards when they record music. When they play live shows, he even plays drums sometimes! Patrick is one of the band's main singers. He sings lead on many of their songs. He also adds backup vocals to most of their other tunes.

Patrick's Musical Journey

Patrick Pentland became very serious about music in high school. He especially loved playing the guitar. His father was also a musician. He played in bands in Northern Ireland during the 1960s and 1970s. This inspired Patrick to follow in his father's footsteps.

Patrick learned to play the recorder in elementary school. He also played the saxophone in his junior high band. But he eventually chose the guitar as his main instrument.

Early Bands and Hard Rock Sounds

Patrick's first band was a hard rock group called Prosecutor. They started in the fall of 1984. They played songs by bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. They also wrote some of their own songs inspired by these groups.

Prosecutor played two shows in the spring of 1985. One was at their local practice spot. The other was outside a music store. By this time, Patrick was interested in heavier metal music. He discovered bands like Motorhead and Metallica.

Exploring Punk and Alternative Music

Through metal music, Patrick found out about punk rock. He especially liked American hardcore punk. He also visited Northern Ireland several times. There, he heard bands like The Sex Pistols and The Cure.

By 1986, Patrick formed a hardcore band called The Ripping Convulsions. They later shortened their name to The Convulsions. This group played several shows at house parties in Halifax. They recorded two music tapes. The songs were mostly written by Patrick and another band member, John Johnson. The Convulsions broke up in the summer of 1987.

Patrick and some friends then formed a band called Toxic Waste. They recorded one song in the fall of 1987.

Forming Happy Co.

Patrick and his friend Cliff Gibb then formed a band called Happy Co. This was in late 1987. They were inspired by American alternative guitar bands. Some of these bands were Sonic Youth and Pixies.

Happy Co. was the first time Patrick sang lead vocals. He also became the main songwriter for the band. Happy Co. played several shows in Halifax. Future Sloan members Chris Murphy and Jay Ferguson were also playing in bands there. Happy Co. continued until 1990. The members decided to focus on their college studies.

Joining Sloan

In January 1991, Chris Murphy asked Patrick to join his new band. This band was called Sloan. Chris had started it with Jay Ferguson. Andrew Scott joined as the drummer.

The new band quickly put together a list of original songs. They played their first show just two weeks after Patrick joined. This concert was at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

Other Musical Projects

Patrick has also written for music magazines. He even wrote a blog about Sloan's performances and tours. He contributed a song to a children's TV show called Role Play. He has also made music for several TV commercials.

In 2005, Patrick started releasing electronic music online. He uses the name Destroy Tomorrow 666 for these projects. He has also been a DJ at popular clubs in Toronto.
