Patrick Sutherland was an important leader in early Nova Scotia. He first served as the commander of Fort Edward (Nova Scotia). Later, he became one of the people who helped start the town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. He stayed in charge of Lunenburg for about 15 years, until he passed away around 1768.

Sutherland played a big part in helping Lunenburg survive during difficult times. These included conflicts like Father Le Loutre's War and the French and Indian War.

A Leader in Nova Scotia

Patrick Sutherland was a key figure in protecting the new settlement of Lunenburg. He helped keep the peace during a local uprising called the Lunenburg Rebellion. After the Raid on Lunenburg (1756), he built strong blockhouses. These were small forts designed to protect the village from attacks.

Protecting the Settlements

Sutherland also took part in important military actions. He helped during the Siege of Louisbourg (1758). This was a major battle to capture a French fort. He also worked to protect Lunenburg during the attacks that followed, known as the Lunenburg Campaign (1758).

Later Public Service

In 1759, Sutherland became a justice of the peace. This meant he helped keep law and order. A year later, in 1760, he took on more important roles. He became a custos rotulorum, which was like being the chief justice of the peace for the county. He also became a judge in the Inferior Court of Common Pleas for Lunenburg County.

Military Career

Patrick Sutherland was promoted to major in the 77th Regiment of Foot. This was a military unit. In 1762, he took part in the Battle of St. John's. This was another important battle.

Patrick Sutherland passed away in 1766.
