Patriots Square Park was a special urban park in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. An urban park is a green space in a city where people can relax and have fun. This park was changed a lot as part of a bigger building project called CityScape. Many parts of the park were taken down starting in 2009.

Before the CityScape project began in 2007, Patriots Square Park was 2.5 acres (about 1 hectare) big. It had open areas, a stage for shows, and places to buy food. The park also covered a public parking garage that was built underground. This parking garage is still there and is used today.

What Was Patriots Square Park Like?

Patriots Square Park was a popular spot for many community events. For example, the Arizona Asian Festival and Cinco de Mayo celebrations were held there. The park is also known as one of the Phoenix Points of Pride. These are places in Phoenix that are special and important to the city.

A Look Back in Time

The park was first built in 1976. It was named to honor the brave fighters of the American Revolutionary War. This war was when the American colonies fought for their freedom from Great Britain.

In 1988, the park was redesigned by a group called Alexander and Associates. This redesign included the underground parking garage. For some years after that, the park wasn't always kept in the best condition.

The Park's Big Change

Patriots Square Park was sometimes seen as not being used enough or being forgotten. But in 2006, it became a big topic in local news. A company called RED Development wanted to include the park in their huge CityScape plan. The Phoenix city council, which is like the city's government, approved this plan.

Why the Park Changed

The CityScape project is a very large building plan for the city. It includes new stores, hotels, and tall buildings. When people first heard that the park might become part of a private project, many were upset. Residents were worried about losing a public park space.

Even though city officials said the plan would make the park better, people still protested. They wanted to keep their park. Because of their strong feelings, RED Development and the city had to change their plans. They showed the new plans at a public meeting. Some people saw the new design as a small win, but many were still not happy with it.

A New Beginning

The park officially opened again on November 4, 2010. To celebrate, there was a free concert for two days. Famous singers like Macy Gray and the band Third Eye Blind performed there.
