Patterson is a small place in Harvey County, Kansas, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community," which means it's a town that doesn't have its own local government. It's located about 5 miles south of a town called Burrton. You can find it where SW 84th St and S Patterson Rd meet.

The Story of Patterson

Patterson got its name from James Patterson. He was one of the first people to settle in the area, specifically in Lake Township, Harvey County.

How the Town Started

The town site of Patterson was planned on September 25, 1888. A person named L.A. Hamlin helped "survey and lay out" the area. The land belonged to Dr. Thomas S. Hunt and Susan Barbee Hunt. In 1887, Dr. Hunt gave some of his land to the Kansas Midland Railroad Company. This land was used for the railroad tracks. Dr. Hunt then helped develop the town and sold lots for people to build homes and businesses.

Patterson and the Railroad

Patterson became a stop on a railroad line. This line was part of the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway. It connected the cities of Wichita and Burrton. Back then, two passenger trains would pass through Patterson every day. This made it an important place for travel and trade.

The Post Office

A post office opened in Patterson in 1888. It helped people send and receive mail. The post office stayed open for many years. However, it closed down in 1927.

Changes Over Time

The community was always located along a railroad line. This line ran between Burrton and Bentley. But the train tracks were removed sometime in the 1990s or early 2000s.

Education in Patterson

Students in Patterson attend public schools. The community is part of the Burrton USD 369 school district.
