Patti Flynn (born Patricia Maude Young, 1937 – 10 September 2020) was a talented jazz singer, writer, and a strong voice for social justice. She helped start and support Black History Wales. In 2019, she received a special Lifetime Achievement Award for all her amazing work.

Early Life of Patti Flynn

Patti Flynn was born Patricia Maude Young in 1937. Her family lived on Sophia Street in Cardiff, Wales. She was the youngest of seven children. Her father, Wilmott George Young, was a merchant seaman (a sailor who works on trading ships) from Jamaica. Her mother, Beatrice Young, was from Cardiff.

Patti's father came to Cardiff in the 1920s. Sadly, during the Second World War, he died when his ship was attacked by a torpedo. When Patti was one year old, her family moved to Pomeroy Street. She later went to St. Mary's School in Clarence Road, Cardiff. The family also lived on North Church Street in Butetown.

Patti grew up to become a famous jazz singer. She was a friend and fellow musician with Shirley Bassey, who also grew up in the Tiger Bay area. Patti was also a writer and acted on the radio. She helped create the Butetown Bay Jazz Festival.

Later Life and Important Work

The monument for the contributions made by the Black, Asian and minority ethnic service men and women during World Wars I and II, and beyond

Later in her life, Patti Flynn lived in Fairwater, a part of Cardiff. She worked very hard for 26 years to get a special monument built. This monument would honor the brave Black, Asian, and other minority ethnic service members. These men and women fought in World War I, World War II, and other conflicts.

In 2019, Patti Flynn, along with Uzo Iwobi and Race Council Cymru, helped make this monument a reality. They worked with important people like Deputy Minister Jane Hutt and the Cardiff Council. Patti Flynn even wrote the words that are carved on the monument. This monument helps make sure that the sacrifices of these service members in Wales are never forgotten.

In 2019, Patti received the Ethnic Minority Welsh Women Achievement Association's (EMWWAA) Lifetime Achievement Award. Her friend Humie Webbe also won awards at the same event. Patti was also a founder and supporter of Black History Wales.

Patti Flynn passed away from cancer on September 10, 2020, at the age of 83.
