The Pattullo Bridge is a really important bridge in British Columbia, Canada. It's a special type of bridge called a through arch bridge. This means its main support is a big arch that goes over the road. The bridge crosses the wide Fraser River. It connects the city of New Westminster on one side to Surrey on the other.
About the Pattullo Bridge
The Pattullo Bridge helps thousands of cars, trucks, and buses cross the Fraser River every day. It has four lanes for vehicles. People can also walk or bike across the bridge. It's a key link for travel and trade in the Greater Vancouver area. The bridge is maintained by TransLink.
A Brief History
The Pattullo Bridge first opened to traffic in 1937. It has been a busy crossing ever since. On January 18, 2009, a fire happened on the south side of the bridge. A wooden part of the bridge, called a trestle, was damaged. This part connects the main steel and concrete bridge to the land.
Workers quickly began to fix the damage. The burned wooden section needed to be completely rebuilt. Thanks to their hard work, the bridge was able to reopen just eight days later, on January 26. This allowed people to use it again for their daily travel.
