The Paugnut Forest Administration Building is a special old building located in Burr Pond State Park in Torrington, Connecticut. People also call it the Burr Pond Park Bungalow. It was built in 1937 by a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This building is a great example of a style called Bungalow/Craftsman architecture. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This means it is an important historical site.
About the Building
The Paugnut Forest Administration Building is found on the east side of Burr Pond State Park. It is near other park buildings where the old CCC camp used to be. This area is a bit northeast of the main parking lot and beach at the park.
Building Design
The building has one and a half stories. It is made from stone and wood. A roof with gables that cross over covers the building. It has a "T" shape when you look at it from above. There is a porch on the east side, tucked under one of the gables. The walls are mostly made of rough stones. The porch also has stone supports. Steps made of granite lead up to the porch in the middle. The roof above the porch shows its wooden beams.
Building History
Burr Pond State Park is surrounded by Paugnut State Forest. The state bought this land in 1929 from the Borden family. The Borden family used to have a milk factory by the pond. This factory was the first of its kind.
The Civilian Conservation Corps
Many of the park's buildings and areas were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a program during the Great Depression. It gave young men jobs building parks and other public works. CCC crews worked at this camp from 1933 to 1937. This building was the main office for their camp. Since then, it has been used by the state parks department for different office tasks. It is one of the best-kept buildings made by the CCC in Connecticut.
