A Writer's Life
Michel Rigaud was born in Paris, France, on September 22, 1934. As a young boy, he had to leave Paris during World War II and lived in a town called Niort. He later studied law and journalism, learning how to write and report stories.
After his studies, Michel served in the Algerian War for over two years. He worked as an officer gathering important information. When he finished his military service, he became a journalist. He wrote for many newspapers and even helped start a magazine called Aviation 2000.
In the early 1970s, Michel started writing spy novels. His publisher suggested he use a different name, a pseudonym, for his books. He chose "Paul-Jean Hérault" after his grandmother's name.
From Spies to Sci-Fi
Soon, Paul-Jean Hérault decided to write science fiction stories. He was excited to tell the kinds of tales he loved. His first science fiction novel was Le Rescapé de la Terre (The Survivor of Earth). This book started his popular Cal de Ter series. He wrote more than 30 novels in total!
In 1996, Paul-Jean Hérault felt disappointed when his publisher limited his stories to 220 pages. He decided to retire early at age 60. However, his writing was still recognized. In 2005, he won the Prix Rosny-Aîné, a special award for French science fiction.
After a break, he returned to writing with a novel called Millecrabe. Paul-Jean Hérault passed away on October 26, 2020, at the age of 86.
