Niort is a city in western France. It is the main city, or prefecture, of the Deux-Sèvres area. Niort is known for its history and its important role in business.
In 2017, about 58,707 people lived in Niort. More than 177,000 people live in the wider urban area around the city.

Niort is located on the Sèvre Niortaise river. This river is important for the city's history and its green landscapes. The city is also a major center for growing angelica, a plant used in food and medicine.
Near Niort, in a place called Maisonnay, you can find one of the tallest radio masts in France. It stands at an impressive 330 meters (about 1,083 feet) tall!
Getting Around Niort
Niort is a key spot for travel. It has a railway station, Gare de Niort, which is on the TGV high-speed train route. You can reach Paris Montparnasse station in just 2 hours and 15 minutes by TGV.
The city is also a major road and motorway hub. Motorways connect Niort to big cities like Paris and Bordeaux (A10). It also links to Nantes (A83) and La Rochelle (N11). Niort is special because it is the largest French city to offer free public transport to everyone.
